French Onion Meatballs with Savory Onion Sauce

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef or a mix of beef and pork for extra juiciness
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs panko works best
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • For the Savory Onion Sauce:
  • 3 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp sugar to help caramelize the onions
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or fresh sprigs
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups beef broth low sodium preferred
  • ½ cup dry white wine optional, for depth of flavor
  • Salt and pepper to taste
